Chapter 11

She had never felt more frustrated in her life.

It wasn’t that Caitriona had never desired someone from a distance before, the deep ache in her belly was proof enough of having lived this feeling before. It was that she missed Angeline. Desperately.

Even though Angeline was sitting a few feet away from her, engaged in a friendly game of cards with her mother, she was the picture of sophistication and grace with her hair piled neatly atop her head, her hands folded properly across her lap, and a small coy smile across her lips.

Looking at her out of the corner of her eye, Caitriona would never have been able to guess that a few days ago, they were standing in front of each other, their chests rising and falling heavily, their petticoats, the only layer between, them as they gave into the fire.

Ever since then, Angeline had been avoiding her. It wasn’t that she did it on purpose, or maybe she did, Caitriona couldn’t quite tell. She was in no hurry to find out either.

Not that she was making much of an effort herself.

She just didn’t know what to say, and she was deathly afraid that if she were anywhere near her again, that she’d be tempted to steal a kiss from those sensuous and full lips of hers. But she knew she couldn’t risk that again.

They lived in the 18th century for heaven’s sake!

Back in her time, in a future beyond Angeline’s imagination, they might’ve gotten a few stink eyes, and maybe even some hate mail, yet in the end they had rights. But here, she guessed that lesbians were probably hunted down like witches during the Salem witch trials.

More to the point, she wasn’t even sure that Angeline was a lesbian.

Her reaction to the kiss was expected at first, and even though she didn’t pull back, she didn’t exactly respond either. So Caitriona wasn’t sure what to make of that paradox. She wanted so badly to ask her, but it was a can of worms better left unopened.

It was making her head spin though, and she could barely eat or sleep because of how fast her brain was going. She tore her gaze away from Angeline and tried to focus on the book in front of her, but the words just kept swimming in and out of focus.

She had picked up this book in the hopes that a good read about the history of England might keep her mind occupied for a bit. And maybe help her learn a little more about decorum and such, so there was a less of the likelihood that she’d get caught.

However, all it was doing was providing a very flimsy barrier between her and Angeline. She was dimly aware of the chatter floating around her, but she lifted her book, narrowed her gaze, and tried fiercely to stay focused on the book. Yet her eyes kept traveling back to the corner where they sat playing cards.

How was Angeline able to do it?
